How Many Cups of Tea Are in Each Package?
Ever wonder how many cups you'll get from a package of loose leaf tea? It's easier than you think — just two things to know. First, check the weight of your package (it's listed on every product page). Second, think about your cup size. Technically, a "cup" in the tea world is 6 ounces, but let's be real — most of us brew into 8- to 12-ounce mugs.
Here's what to expect from each size:
| Package size | Total brewed tea | 8-oz mugs | 12-oz mugs |
|---|---|---|---|
| ½ oz | about 28 oz | 3–4 | 2 |
| 1 oz | about 56 oz | 7 | 4–5 |
| 2 oz | about 112 oz | 14 | 9 |
| 3 oz | about 168 oz | 21 | 14 |
| 8 oz | about 448 oz | 56 | 37 |
| 1 lb | about 896 oz | 112 | 74 |
These numbers are for true teas from the Camellia sinensis plant: black, green, white, and oolong. Many oolongs can be re-steeped several times, so you'll often get even more from them.
Herbal and fruit teas are more forgiving. Their ingredients are bulkier, so you may want a heaping spoonful, and you don't need to worry about bitterness. Brew what tastes good to you.
